Meet John MacKay, Principal of MacKay & Co.
What’s your all-time favourite fragrance? I’ve been wearing Terre d’Hermès for I don’t know how many years now. Twelve? I was Hermès’ PR counsel then, so I was around it all the time. It just worked—something about that fragrance and my skin. Suddenly people were saying, “You smell good” and “Wow, what are you wearing?” I’ve tried to change. I’ll smell other fragrances in stores or on other people and love them. I’ll like them when they’re spritzed on a card, but not on my skin. In my experience, most fragrances become too sweet on me. Not Terre d’Hermès.
What’s your best new find? A friend told me about Creed Aventus; she thought I might like it. And I did. I tried it at a fragrance counter and wandered up and down Wilshire Boulevard sniffing my wrists. It’s fruity without being soft, and there’s a little patchouli in there. I’m a sucker for patchouli. I also really like Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Masculin Pluriel and Jubilation from Amouage. But they aren’t enough to sway me. I like being a one-fragrance guy.
How many bottles are in your fragrance collection? One big, bold bottle of Terre d’Hermès.
What’s your signature spritz style? I’m in the danger zone that anyone who wears one fragrance all the time is in. Since the scent is everywhere and on everything in your world, you lose sight (scent) of how much is too much. I recently took the hint when someone six feet from me commented on my fragrance. I was a two-spritz guy (neck and torso); now, I’m one.
