Hot Launch: The First Men’s Scent From Dior in 10 Years

The back story: Despite the similar-sounding (and likely-to-confuse-consumers) name, Dior Sauvage—the house’s first fragrance for men in a decade—is not a spin-off version of the brand’s beloved Eau Sauvage (the aromatic citrus released in 1966). With this entirely new brew, in-house perfumer François Demachy wanted freshness but also excess. Conveying the “wild at heart” message, professional eccentric Johnny Depp fronts the cinematic ad campaign (below), his first one ever for a fragrance.

The bottle: Sleek and simple: round lines, grey-gradient glass, magnetic black lacquer cap.

The notes: The spritz opens with bergamot sourced from Reggio di Calabria, Italy, and Sichuan black pepper. Then the trail hits with an overdose concentration of Ambroxan (derived from ambergris), plus patchouli. Consider it a modern mix striving for new-classic status.

Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette, $74, 60 mL, available September 2 at Dior counters.
