Facial massage isn’t typically a part of everyday beauty routines. Recently, however, facialists like La Mer’s Joanna Czech have been touting the benefits of spending a few extra minutes each day tending to skin through strategic tapping, rubbing and lifting, while brands are introducing a variety of tools that make it easier for consumers to take matters into their own hands. “Using a facial massage roller replicates the kneading, draining and acupressure techniques practiced by aestheticians,” says Mary Tsampiras, national training manager at Shiseido Canada. Regularly practising proper massage relieves the fluid congestion that causes puffiness and swelling and promotes the elimination of toxins, she adds. “It firms the skin, prevents sagging and activates the skin’s metabolism, improving overall function and giving a youthful definition to contours.” While massagers with beauty benefits are nothing new (in China, jade face-rollers date back to the 7th century), the latest iterations have decidedly modern applications.
