Birchbox to Suspend Canadian Operations

Sample-box pioneer Birchbox announced this week that it will be withdrawing from the Canadian market. The beauty e-tailer launched in Canada in November 2014. In a statement to customers on its website and Facebook, co-founder and CEO Katia Beauchamp cited “the current exchange rate and high shipping costs” as the factors underpinning the decision.

Made-in-Canada Skincare Brand Consonant Launches on Sephora.ca

Consonant, the all-natural skincare brand hailing from Toronto, has just expanded its distribution, arriving on Sephora.ca early this month. Bill Baker, a former advertising and brand management pro who founded the company in 2009 after curing his chronic case of dermatitis with a switch to 100 percent natural skincare, said in an official statement that this new partnership reflects growing consumer demand for green products that deliver results.

Holt Renfrew Launches Beauty E-Commerce

Last week, luxury department-store retailer Holt Renfrew quietly revealed a revamped website, complete with its long-awaited foray into e-commerce. Just in time for the holiday shopping boom, the new HoltRenfrew.com now carries 7,000 beauty products from over 50 brands, including Sisley, La Prairie, La Mer, Christian Louboutin Beauty, Aesop, Charlotte Tilbury and Tom Ford, with free shipping on beauty orders over $100. Offerings cover makeup, skincare, fragrance, men’s grooming and more. Currently, only Holt Renfrew’s cosmetics department is shoppable online, but additional categories are set to be added throughout 2016.

Interview: Philippe Pinatel, SVP and GM of Sephora Canada, Talks Beauty E-Commerce

Sephora.com has been serving up CanCon (such as bilingual functionality) since 2012, but today, the LVMH-owned beauty mecca is unveiling a revamped site for the Canadian market—promising better, faster service. Orders will be fulfilled by a distribution centre in Brampton, Ont., which equals speedier shipping (one to five days on average, down from five to 12 days), free shipping for orders of more than $50 and free returns. Although the 26,000-square-meter distribution centre has been stocking Canadian stores for a few years, it only recently became capable of handling .ca orders—an upgrade that required a major IT investment. As the site re-launches, Cosmetics spoke with Philippe Pinatel, SVP and GM of Sephora Canada, on the retailer’s competitive edge in beauty e-commerce.
